Where I stand on the issues for
Montrose County

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:

We need to focus our resources toward educating our children and workers. This can provide the high tech, high paying jobs Montrose needs.  Because employers are looking for an educated and resourceful workforce, I have established an educational task force that is looking at this issue. No taxpayer money should be paid as an incentive for moving or expanding companies.

FAIRNESS:

The basic aim for any society is fairness, an even playing field.  Fairness means that all sides are heard equally and all -- individuals as well as businesses -- contribute their fair share to maintaining our county, its infrastructure and our rural heritage.

LAND USE:

Montrose has always been a commercial and agricultural community. How we use our land ultimately defines our county. Without land use policies, development occurs randomly, impacts property values, transportation, our agricultural heritage and whether or not families and businesses want to move to Montrose. I believe that Montrose County needs to have a plan in place that leads to the development of sound and thoughtful land use policies.

TRANSPORTATION:

The rural West poses many challenges for efficient movement of people and goods.   Vast distances separate us from the rest of the world.   We need to focus on efficient transportation modes to be competitive and maintain our quality of life.

HOME-BASED BUSINESS:

The ability to start and grow a business is central to the American way of life. Home-based businesses are the primary method for starting a business. Respect and safety for neighbors must be maintained and commercial operations must be conducted on business properties.

AGRICULTURE AND RURAL VALUES:

The rural life style defines Montrose. We need to focus on maintaining profitable farming and ranching operations. Land use development must identify and protect farming and ranching.

MINERAL DEVELOPMENT:

Mineral development is needed for our county and our nation. The role of Montrose County is to ensure that the development that occurs is performed in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our citizens. Development must pay its fair share for maintaining the quality of live in our county.
