Bill Patterson has lived in Montrose, Colorado for 22 years. Bill was a Montrose County Commissioner and served as a Montrose City Council Member from April of 1996 through April 2000 serving two years as Mayor. Other organizations Bill is currently involved with include the Mesa State College Advisory Committee, Region 10, and the Colorado Solid and Hazardous Waste Commission. Bill is a member of the Montrose Rotary Club and Montrose Botanical Society. Past services have included election to the Montrose Economic Development Council, appointment to the Montrose Regional Airport Authority, and many other community organizations. Bill is a private pilot, instrument rated and a certified airframe and powerplant mechanic. Bill owns a Cessna T337G and flies primarily for business.
Bill and Judy Patterson have been married for 50 years. Bill started working with a family steel fabrication business, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1957 and was discharged from active duty in 1961 as an Aviation Structural Mechanic 3rd Class. Bill and Judy were married during this time of service. Bill then worked as a welder for 4 years while owning and operating an 80 acre hay farm. Bill and Judy’s first entrepreneurial experience was a J.I. Case farm and construction equipment dealership.
Bill graduated from the Ohio State University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Summa Cum Laude), and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Studies continued with all courses completed for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and passing the General Exam.
Bill then moved to Cambridge Massachusetts with Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc. an acoustic consulting firm. As Project Manager and Group Leader in Commercial Consulting, many contacts were made, especially in Washington, D.C.
Bill’s next job was with Gardner-Denver, Inc. in Denver, Colorado. Bill was Chief Engineer, Research and Development at G-D traveling over the United States and Canada. After a buyout of Gardner-Denver, TEI Rock Drills was started in 1980 as Technological Enterprises, Inc. using the basement of our house. During this time Bill also taught Machine Design at the University of Colorado, Denver.
As TEI expanded in Denver, new and larger facilities were needed. We were contacted by Montrose Industrial Development (a Department of the City of Montrose) to consider moving to Montrose. As soon as we visited Montrose we began plans for moving.
TEI Rock Drills produces percussion and rotary rock drills, primarily for installation as attachments to construction equipment. TEI exports almost half of its annual production, primarily to Europe, Canada, Mexico and Central/South America. TEI currently employs 35 people from Montrose.
Montrose has been good for our business and family. Montrose offers the best in rural living. It is my goal to use my business and community service experience to improve the job and commercial opportunities available in Montrose.
